Today's Musician wants to write his fugues!
You can't tackle a fugue without a method.
Handeling harmony, counterpoint, voice entries, imitations, counter-subjects all at once is a very challenging cognitive task.
Then it happens that when the third voice enters, you get stuck, you don't know how to proceed anymore, and it's frustrating.
And you also wonder why you shouldn't be able to write a fugue.
Handel has already helped Princess Anne, and you could follow the same path outlined by him.
What better idea than to learn directly from one of the greatest masters of all time?
How is Handel's plan structured to help Princess Anna learn the art of fugue?
Let's find it out!
The six Fugues!
The plan designed by Handel consists of 6 fugues, in gradual order of difficulty, in each of which you will learn and put into practice a single compositional technique in a targeted and organized manner.
In this journey, you will never be alone, as I, Richardus, will accompany you through every fugue, every step of the way, providing you with all the video and PDF materials you need, insider tips derived from experience, and the support you may require by posting your questions in the Community within the course!
Fugue 1: Master Real Answer
In the first fugue in F major, Handel will teach you how to handle the simplest structure, yet of fundamental importance for successfully tackling the subsequent fugues!
Here are the resources you will have at your disposal:
Frame from Analysis of the Partimento Bass-Line
Fugue 2: Master Tonal Answer
In the second fugue in G Minor, Handel will teach you how to Manage the Tonal Answer, that is when you have to change a note in the Answer in order to repect the alternation of degrees 1 and 5 (Tonic and Dominant in modern terms).
Here are the resources you will have at your disposal:
Subject of the Fugue

Fugue 3: Master Double Exposition
With the third fugue in F Major, things start to get very interesting!
In fact, you will no longer have a single exposition, but a Double Exposition;
after the initial exposition Subject - Answer - Subject - Answer (or Dux - Comes - Dux - Comes),
another will follow in which the Subject and Answer will be inverted: Answer - Subject - Answer - Subject (or Comes - Dux - Comes - Dux).
To better illustrate how to do it and to help you understand more deeply how this technique works, before moving on to the Partimento Fugue, you will analyze with me the Model provided by Handel related to this exercise!

Fugue 4: Master Minor Exposition and Stretti
Exercise number 4 is the continuation of exercise number 3, but with the addition of new tasks.
First of all, the key changes to G Major.
Then, after the double exposition, you will have to face an exposition in the minor mode and a stretto, which means when the subject enters in one voice before it has finished being sung in another that is already singing it.
Here are the resources you will have at your disposal:

Fugue 5: Master Counter Subject
In fugue number 5, you will have two Subjects to manage: one main and one secondary, or countersubject.
This means that every time you play the subject in one voice, you will also have to make the countersubject sing in another voice.
The subject and the countersubject are in double counterpoint, meaning reversible, and for this reason, they are written with many intervals of thirds and sixths!
If you think managing two subjects together is very difficult, well, you might also think that if you have two melodies already linked together, then the fugue is already made... So, it's even easier!

Here are the resources you will have at your disposal:
And this final exercise represents the pinnacle of the art of Partimento fugues with a Partimento Fugue in E Major where you have two subjects in Augmentation!
The 2 Subject have the same malodies, but one of them is written with double values!
